From the Introduction by author Richard Middleton...
"When I was a beginning guitarist, I knew several very good players in my
neighborhood. The power of their grooves and their wide tonal and dynamic range
were qualities I longed to achieve in my own playing.
But as I watched them and tried to pick up their techniques, I was often frustrated.
The physical aspects of what they were doing were so unfamiliar to me and so subtle
as to be almost invisible. My eyes simply couldn't see what was so clear to my ears.
When I asked these players to show me what they knew, what they said was often very
vague. Whether they couldn't explain it, or wouldn't explain it, or didn't even understand
it themselves, the result for me was the same: more frustration.
Over time, I learned on my own, and gradually mastered these techniques, and many
more besides. And when I started teaching guitar students in 1988, I began the process of
revealing and explaining these techniques to others, as I had once wished someone would
explain them to me.
Over the years, I've helped hundreds of students become better rhythm guitar players. This
book is a distillation of that teaching. I hope it serves you well... Enjoy!"
